The 5th warmest November on record in New York City now a memory, December began with a much cooler airmass in place behind a cold front. The next few days will offer much of the same, as clear skies and full sun will only be able to produce highs near 50 on both Friday and Saturday. This is thanks to a Canadian high pressure which is built in over the area. The cold air comes as a drastic change from the last week of November, which offered record setting highs. Temperatures will rebound a bit on Sunday as a ridge builds in the mid-levels of the atmosphere and the airmass over the area modifies. Without any new cold air source, it is expected that temperatures will rise each day as we work towards the new week. Winds will still be a bit breezy on Friday, but not as strong as Wednesday or Thursday. Overnight lows will still drop into the 20's and 30's until Saturday Night, when they will start trending a bit warmer. Pictured right: The NAM Model showing high pressure built in over the area this weekend.

THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE...

Today (Friday): Sunny, with a high near 53. West winds between 10 and 15 miles per hour.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. North winds between 5 and 10 miles per hour.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 49. North winds around 10 miles per hour.

Sunday: Mostly sunny and milder, with a high near 56. Overnight low near 44.

METEOROLOGICAL WINTER BEGINS...

Meteorological winter began yesterday, December 1st 2011. If you're like us, this usually means exciting and challenging times are ahead as snowstorms and associated systems are closer to impacting the forecast area. This can be one of the most humbling times of the year for a weather forecaster. Our latest Technical Featured Discussion details our thoughts on the first two to three weeks of the meteorological winter, leading us towards the holiday weekend. NAM Model showing high pressure
controlling our weather this weekend
The warm air which built throughout the area during the middle of this week was shunted out on Thursday, thanks to a strong disturbance in the middle of the atmosphere. At the surface, a cold front moved through the area late Thursday evening, and winds turned northwesterly. This helped to usher in a new Canadian airmass which, although only briefly, will take control of the areas weather this weekend. In addition, a deepening storm to our northeast will tuck in the cooler air and new airmass with a bit of ferocity, so that winds will be gusty on Friday and Friday evening. Generally, gusts upward of 20 miles per hour are possible during the afternoon...with some higher gusts to near or over 30 miles per hour possible in isolated locations. The main story will be the fact that temperatures will struggle to get out of the 50's on Friday. Still, the airmass is forecast to modify rather quickly, meaning the cold air source will only last a day or two. Highs are forecast to reach into the middle 50's on Saturday and to near 60 on Sunday, as the atmosphere rebounds with another mid level ridge. Finally, the forecast looks to turn unsettled once again by later Monday into Tuesday as another disturbance approaches. The weekend, though, looks to be pleasant...with plenty of sun. You'll just need to bring some warmer clothes along.

THE FORECAST...

Today (Friday): Partly cloudy. High near 51. Breezy, with West winds 15 to 25 miles per hour. The winds could gust over 30 miles per hour at times. Feeling much cooler than the past several days--winds won't help.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low near 39. Still breezy, with winds gusting to near 20 miles per hour. Definitely bring along a warm jacket.

Saturday: Partly cloudy. High near 54. A bit warmer, but still a northwest breeze. Not as bad as Friday, but it'll still feel pretty chilly out there at times. Luckily, we'll have plenty of sun.

NAM model showing low pressure
moving up the coast this week.
Over the past three days, temperatures have averaged over 15 degrees ( to near 20 degrees in spots) above  normal averages. The afternoons have been filled with warm sun, and the weekend was characterized by a summer-like vibe throughout the area as thousands flocked to the beaches. These temperatures and summer-like conditions were a direct result of a large ridge in the mid-levels of the atmosphere, which brought warm air from the south-southwest and funneled it east into our area. The vast high pressure kept the weather dry and sunny, and it made for one of the best stretches of early to mid October weather that one can ask for. Records were broken on Sunday afternoon as the thermometer reached the upper 80's. However, the middle of this week should do it's part to serve as a stark reminder that it is not summer. In fact, it's the middle of October which often features high temperatures in the low to mid 60's and sometimes cool, raw and showery conditions. The forecast during the middle of the week will take a sharp turn towards this historically "normal" pattern.

By Tuesday afternoon, a low pressure system will begin moving north up the East Coast. Currently located off the coast of the Carolinas, this low pressure system is taking over the pattern as the high pressure which dominated our area's weather this weekend moves away. With the counter-clockwise flow of air around a low pressure to our south, winds will take a sharp easterly turn by Tuesday afternoon. Clouds, and temperatures only maxing out in the 70's will be the result...but this won't be the worst of the weather for the week. Tuesday Night through essentially mid-Thursday, the potential will exist for moderate to heavy rain in association with the low pressure, which will pass just east of our area. In fact, Wednesday's high temperatures may barely get into the lower 60's. Sound dramatically cool compared to this weekend? It should, but it's only two to three degrees below our averages this time of year. The rain is expected to begin to wrap up by Friday, and the weekend (although it's in the distant future, still) may provide cool and crisp conditions with a fresh new high pressure moving down from Canada.

THE FORECAST...

Today (Wednesday): Cloudy with a chance of spotty showers. The showers won't be widespread early, band likely would be better defined as isolated. But by afternoon and evening, they will become more scattered. Chance of rain exists pretty much throughout the day.. Winds northeast..generally around 5 to 10 miles per hour but maybe a bit more gusty near the shore and on the coastal waters.

Tonight: Cloudy, with a slight chance of showers throughout the evening. Low near 58. East winds 10 to 15 miles per hour, and the maritime air will make it feel much more damp and cool compared to the past several nights.

NAM model showing low pressure to our east today.
Although our area has been spared the precipitation, a storm system developing off to our south and east over the open Atlantic Ocean provided the presence of clouds on Saturday, and may do so again on Sunday. It's interesting, really, when you consider how dominant the cool and crisp airmass felt on Saturday. But alas, this is a time of year when the airmasses are changing rapidly. We call them "transition seasons" in the meteorological community, where you can't really settle into a dominant pattern. You'll notice in summer, it can be hot and dry for several days. In winter, it can be cold and dry for several days. But many times in Autumn and Spring, the fair weather at extended periods is hard to come by. Still, we can't complain. The forecast for Sunday looks dry, although clouds will get in the way again during the afternoon. Temperatures in the middle 60's seem like a good bet during the afternoon as well, with some more sun than we saw on Saturday. The winds will be northeast, relatively cool throughout the day. By evening, the storm offshore will be well east of the area...and high pressure will begin to build back in again.

THE FORECAST...

Today (Sunday): Again the possibility of clouds developing by afternoon, but there should be a few more hours of sun than on Saturday. Temperatures will rise into the low to mid 60's during the afternoon. Winds again northeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Looks like a good day to bring along a light sweatshirt.

Tonight (Sunday Night): Partly cloudy, as the clouds become less widespread. Temperatures dropping into the low 50's once again in the city, and mid 40's in the interior. Sweatshirts a good idea once again.

A LOOK AHEAD TO THE WORK WEEK...

The work week looks to follow the trend of the past several days, with some fair days and some unsettled days. High pressure will be in control on Monday and the first half of Tuesday, bringing fair weather. In fact, it could return towards normal levels on both of those days with high temperatures climbing into the lower 70's and mid 70's respectively. By Tuesday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are possible ahead of a warm front. The forecast may remain unsettled, with a chance of showers, through the middle of the week.

Visible satellite imagery at 630pm 9/17/11
Today was defined mostly by the presence of mid level clouds, which got in the way by the late morning after a few hours of bright sun to start the day.  These clouds developed in response to a mid level disturbance, which moved from west to east from the Ohio Valley, towards the Mid Atlantic, and then offshore today. Although our area was spared the precipitation, the clouds definitely got in the way of what would have otherwise been a pleasant and sunny day. Instead of sun, mostly cloudy skies prevailed and some showers scraped the New Jersey shore. They may scrape long island as well through the evening. Generally though, over the next several hours, these clouds are expected to thin and move east and offshore. This should set the stage for a relatively calm and pleasant evening, with partly cloudy skies and cooling temperatures. The lack of clouds and light winds should allow for good radiating, and temperatures will drop again into the lower 50's in the metro area. In the interior, temperatures should again fall into the mid to upper 40's.

THE FORECAST...

Through Tonight: Mostly cloudy early, then becoming partly cloudy overnight. A chance of showers on the NJ shore and Long Island early, then becoming partly cloudy there as well. Low temperatures dropping into the lower 50's in the metro area, and the mid to upper 40's. Winds light and out of the northeast. We'd recommend long sleeves and probably a sweatshirt.

Sunday: Again the possibility of clouds developing by afternoon, but there should be a few more hours of sun than on Saturday. Temperatures will rise into the low to mid 60's during the afternoon. Winds again northeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Latest Northeast US Temperatures (click to enlarge)
The cool weather which we've been advertising for days has settled in to the area this morning, and made itself established first on Friday. Temperatures only reached into the low to mid 60's in most areas (with the exception of the urban areas, which typically run a few degrees warmer regardless of the airmass), and winds were out of the northwest and a bit blustery in the morning. Dew points were also dramatically lower, adding to the crisp and clear air. Air quality was great on Friday, for the first time in several weeks, as a high pressure remained in control. However, the forecast is slowly changing and transitioning (as it always is) and the first signs were easily visible late Friday afternoon as high clouds moved in and blocked the sunlight. These clouds were moving towards our area in response to a disturbance in the middle levels of the atmosphere. This disturbance will remain over the region today, causing skies to range from partly to mostly cloudy throughout the day. The high clouds over the area may re-appear during the day today, and although the sun won't be totally muted as it is during overcast skies, it will be noticeably less sunny. Temperatures, as a result, will be held into the mid 60's once again.

WHY WAS IT A BIT WARMER FRIDAY NIGHT?

It's interesting to note, in a post-mortem sort of way, how the high clouds prevented temperatures from falling rapidly Friday night into the early hours of this morning. The answer lies in the feature we discussed in the Friday afternoon blog post, "radiating". When the skies are clear under a cool airmass (or any airmass, really), the atmosphere can "radiate" overnight. Essentially, in the most simplistic of terms, the heat from the day at the surface (radiation) can escape into the atmosphere under clear skies and light winds. The calm winds are important, too, as they prevent the atmosphere from mixing..but we'll save the mixing of temperatures conversation for another day. Clouds, however, make the story more complicated. The clouds can hold the radiation near the surface, keeping the temperature warmer. This is way in some cases, on overcast nights, the temperature only drops a few degrees with the loss of the sunlight. On clear nights, it can drop several degrees.

As we saw Friday night into the early hours of this morning, the clouds over the area prevented the favorable radiating that would have allowed another big drop in temperatures. Instead, areas farther north over New England (sans the clouds) dropped to unseasonably cool temperatures once again, and although our area was still below normal, temperatures were not as cold as they were Thursday Night.

THE FORECAST...

Today (Saturday): Partly to mostly cloudy, high temperatures near 67. Winds turning from northwest to east at 5 to 10 miles per hour. We'd definitely recommend jeans, but the long sleeves is a bit of a toss up given the temperatures nearing 70 in the afternoon. It really depends on your preference! Overall, not too bad of a Saturday.

Tonight (Saturday Night): Partly cloudy, and cool once again, with a low in the low 50's. Cooler inland and north of the city (mid to upper 40's). Sounds like sweatshirt weather to us!

A look ahead: Fair weather looks to be in control through Tuesday, when a warm front approaches the area..bringing with it a chance of scattered showers through at least Wednesday.

Temperature change over the last 24
hours (valid early Friday morning)
The coolest air of the past several months arrived in the forecast area Thursday afternoon, and is still in place today. A cold front swept through the area Thursday Night, effectively ushering in a Canadian airmass with gusty northwest winds. The rapidly dropping dew points are adding to the shocking air--making it feel very crisp. The temperatures dropped more than 20 degrees in some locations (see the map to the right) after the cold front passed last night, and some spots were forecast to dip down into the upper 30's for lows (mostly the interior and higher elevations). No matter how you slice it, it's going to feel downright chilly compared to the past several days (and weeks) of relatively warm summer weather this morning. High temperatures today are forecast to reach into the lower to mid 60's at the very most--a drastic change. As mentioned, the dew points will be low as well. Winds could be gusty in the afternoon, out of the northwest, near 20 miles per hour at times. Overall, it's going to feel like a mid-autumn day throughout, so we hope you're ready. There will be plenty more days like today to come over the next few months.

THE FORECAST...

Today (Friday): Beautifully sunny, with some stray fair weather clouds. High temperatures in the low to mid 60's, low dew points, and beautifully crisp air. Northwest winds may be gusty for a bit during the afternoon---near 20 miles per hour at times. We'd recommend long sleeves and jeans, but the sun can still feel warm this time of year. You'll have to gauge it yourself! A wonderful fall day throughout the area (even though it's still summer!).

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, and still feeling chilly with northwest winds and a cool airmass still in place. Winds will be light, skies will be clearing. May be a degree or two warmer than last night, but overall no major change.

Temperatures in NJ at 6pm (9/15/11)
The coolest air of the past several months has arrived in the forecast area this afternoon and early evening. A cold front swept through the area earlier today, and is ushering in the airmass with gusty northwest winds. The rapidly dropping dew points are adding to the shocking air--making it feel very crisp. Through tonight, it appears likely that the winds will die down at least a bit, and the temperatures will continue to drop as the cold airmass makes it's way here. Temperatures are forecast to drop into the low to mid 40's throughout much of the interior, but may stay closer to 50 in the immediate New York City Metro area. No matter how you slice it, it's going to feel downright chilly compared to the past several days (and weeks) of relatively warm summer weather. The temperature drop could be more than 30 degrees by this evening, and the higher elevations have a chance of dropping into the upper 30's! I think it's safe to say, at this point, that autumn isn't far away. It's certainly doing it's best to let us know.

THE FORECAST...

Through Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy early, with a stray shower or two. Then, becoming mostly clear and much colder. Temperatures dropping into the upper 30's to mid 40's inland, and upper 40's to near 50 in the city. Northwest winds 5-10 miles per hour gusting to 20 mph early. I think it's safe to say, you're going to want a sweatshirt and long pants..maybe a jacket, too.

Friday: Beautifully sunny, with some stray fair weather clouds. High temperatures in the low to mid 60's, low dew points, and beautifully crisp air. A wonderful fall day throughout the area (even though it's still summer!).

NAM model showing low's in the 30's and 40's Friday AM
A cold front currently situated to our west over Pennsylvania, associated with a disturbance in the middle levels of the atmosphere, will move through the area beginning this morning and afternoon. The first sign of the front will be a wind shift at the surface--where the winds will shift from southerly to westerly. During this shift and for the hours after it, showers and thunderstorms will be scattered throughout the area. Finally, temperatures are forecast to drop rather rapidly in the afternoon. In fact, the temperature drop could be as much as 30 degrees. High temperatures in the early afternoon could actually reach towards 80--and then drop near 50 overnight. Winds will increase as well gust out of the northwest by evening. With clearing skies, a much cooler airmass, lower dew points, and light northwest winds...radiational cooling will be ideal Thursday night into Friday morning. Temperatures will drop accordingly, to near record-low levels, especially in the interior. Forecast models currently indicate low temperatures could reach into the upper 30's (yes, that says upper 30's, not a typo) to lower 40's in the interior and higher elevations, and more towards the upper 40's to near 50 in the city and surrounding areas. Either way you slice it, it will feel shockingly cool after the airmass we've been in for a few weeks.

THE FORECAST...

Today (Thursday): Mostly cloudy, with scattered showers and thunderstorms likely, especially during the morning and afternoon. High temperatures near 80 degrees in the city and New Jersey, and in the 70's inland and near the shore. Temperatures dropping rapidly by late afternoon in all areas. Winds will turn west by afternoon. Bring the rain gear along--but we really can't suggest short or long sleeves. It's really a toss up, depending on what time of day you're going out.

Tonight: Okay, now we can recommend long sleeves. Maybe a sweatshirt, too. Temperatures will be near record-low levels in the interior (upper 30's to low 40's)...and the upper 40's to near 50 in the city. The 30 degree drop in temperatures will feel rather shocking, so be prepared.

NAM model's forecast high temps
for today (Wednesday 9-14-11)
In a very similar fashion to the first few days of the week, Wednesday looks to feature pleasant weather and  may even stretch a bit towards the warm side. Temperatures are forecast to rise into the middle to upper 80's by late afternoon, and the southwest winds will keep the air feeling warm as well (no ocean component). Today looks to be another day to keep out the shorts and short sleeved shirts. After all, how many warm days like this do we have left? History says not many, as our odds of reaching higher than the mid to upper 80's go down dramatically after this week. In addition, a strong cold front is forecast to approach the area by Thursday afternoon, ushering in the coldest air of the past several months. Back to tonight, temperatures should only drop into the low 60's. There will also be a chance of a widely scattered shower or thunderstorm, but again, nothing overly intrusive or strong. By evening, skies should become more partly cloudy and the weather should be fair. You may want to at least consider a long sleeved shirt near the shore--we are past the days of very warm weather there throughout the night. The temperature can still drop into the low 60's with a good breeze.

THE FORECAST...

Today (Wednesday): Partly cloudy, warm, highs in the mid to upper 80's. Essentially, a beautiful summer day. Winds southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Slight chance of a widely scattered shower or storm. We'd recommend shorts and short sleeves---by afternoon you'll likely be too hot if you're wearing anything heavier than that.

Tonight (Wednesday Night): A slight chance of a widely scattered shower or storm early, then becoming partly cloudy with low temperatures in the low 60's. Winds remaining southwest, so the evening should continue the comfortable weather trend.

MUCH COOLER AIR ON THE WAY...

A significant mid level disturbance is forecast to drop southeast from Central Canada later this week, bringing with it the coldest air of the past several months. We've got the details on a featured blog post right here

NAM model showing winds off the
ocean Sunday afternoon.
A back door cold front is making it's presence known in the forecast area this morning, and will continue to  do so through the remainder of the day. A back door cold front gets it's name from it's origin, which is to our east or northeast. Normal cold fronts enter the area from the west or northwest. Back door cold fronts usually bring maritime air into the area and winds off the water, and this one will be no different  Although it won't be a washout the front will still bring in cooler air off the ocean. In addition, increased humidity and cloudiness will enter the forecast, making for less than ideal conditions today. A chance of showers and thunderstorms will exist throughout the area beginning this morning and continuing through all of Sunday, although the precipitation should be more showery than steady as mentioned earlier. The atmosphere won't be unstable enough to support many thunderstorms. It won't be continuous or non-stop, but it definitely will be noticeably different than Friday and the first half of Saturday, which offered temperatures into the 80's.
THE FORECAST...

Today (Sunday): Mostly cloudy, with a chance of scattered showers throughout the day. East winds and overcast skies will keep temperatures down into the middle 70's. The air will feel much cooler than the past few days, but it should still be relatively humid.

Tonight (Sunday Night): Continued mostly cloudy skies with a chance of showers as the back door cold front holds on through the overnight period. Temperatures dropping into the mid 60's throughout most of the area. Bring long sleeved gear to stay warm if you're going to be out and about.

An early look ahead to the week: Some clearing is forecast by early next week, but the main story that we're looking ahead to is the potential for our first "fall like" cold front, which could enter the area by the middle to later part of the week. If it does come to fruition, the dew points would lower greatly and the air would feel crisp and fresh for the first time in a while. We'll see!

A FINAL NOTE...

Although we prefer not to indulge into national events, in a day in time when political stances are often extremely over analyzed, today is a bit different. The world changed permanently 10 years ago today, and whether you agree or not with our countries strategical decisions since then, today is a day for us to recognize the heroes which are among us still. Not only were there thousands of heroes in our own city 10 years ago, there are still hundreds of thousands of heroes fighting for our freedom today. Without them, much of what we do on a daily basis would not be possible.

So, take a moment today to think about their sacrifices. Take a moment to say thank you for what they've done and continue to do. We wish we could thank each and every one of them in person, but instead we have a blog post. Although words can only say so much, we will use them to say thank you, and God bless America.
