A strong upper level and surface storm system, fed in part by the remnants of Hurricane Tomas, continues to impact New England and the Northern Mid Atlantic. A strong surface low pressure developed along a frontal boundary well out in the Atlantic Ocean, and then was "captured" by the upper level storm system, forcing it to back (or retrograde) westward towards Southern New England. This was a very unusual storm system, and it's strong upper and mid level features and interaction with a tropical system led to heavy precipitation rates in some areas.

Locations in Southern New England and even as far south as Southwest Connecticut recorded their first measurable snow of the cold season. Areas as far south as Edison, NJ and Southeast Pennsylvania reported sleet and snow for a period of time, sometimes mixed with rain. The four major locations in the New York City Metro (LGA/JFK/EWR/NYC) all reported sleet/snow or flurries for a time period this morning.

The storm system is expected to gradually weaken and continue its loop, turning east and then northeast away from the area, resulting in drying conditions with time this Monday afternoon, although clouds and very cool weather will remain in place. In addition, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6:00pm this evening.
