This week has been characterized, thus far, by rapid temperature rises and drops. Earlier in the week, and the end of the weekend, temperatures rose into the 60's in most of the area amidst a southerly flow. The sun was warm, and it felt more like Spring than late Autumn. Today, though, was the beginning of a different story, a much more wintry one. Get used to it. The cold front that passed our area last night ushered in a northwest flow and colder air, which you probably have noticed if you were outside at all today. It's going to warm up a bit for Thanksgiving (not much), but beyond that, it gets downright frigid. Featured image: Radar image from 8:15pm November 24th, 2010 showing approaching precipitation.

Thanksgiving Forecast: The forecast is slightly complicated, but the main highlights are here. It will be a bit warmer than Wednesday, but not much. Temperatures should rise into the upper 40's by the early afternoon, before some clouds begin to clog up the sky. Temperatures should then flatline (it won't get much warmer than upper 40's in any locations). Precipitation could approach the area, especially areas further south, by the late morning and early afternoon..but will be spotty. There's the possibility the precipitation could start as a brief period of snow or sleet..especially north and west, if precipitation starts by early morning. We aren't expecting any travel difficulties at this time, but as always, we will closely watch it. The rain should then become slightly more widespread by the evening hours. As mentioned, high's in the upper 40's with a light southeast wind.

The rain is forecast to become more widespread by the time Thanksgiving ends, especially into Friday morning. A low pressure system will pass rather close to the region, and as the warm front passes our region temperatures should rise into the 50's on Friday. A cold front will quickly approach from the west, and usher in some of the coldest air of the season. Low temperatures overnight Friday into Saturday, as well as Saturday into Sunday will be in the 20's in almost all areas away from the coast and Long Island. Elevated areas will likely drop into the upper teens or lower 20's in some areas.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with rain likely in the morning. Then becoming partly cloudy. Hi near 57. Winds west at 10 to 15 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent early, then 30 percent late.

Friday Night: Mostly clear and cold, with a low near 29 in the city, and 23 inland. Winds west at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Saturday: Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 39. Winds west at 5 to 10 miles per hour.
