Severe Weather Watch
10:35am Sunday June 06th, 2010
In New Jersey: Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Essex, Hudson, Union, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Somerset, Warren, Ocean, Burlington, Sussex, Hunterdon
In New York: Nassau, Kings, Queens, Kings, Richmond, Manhattan, Bronx, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam
In: Connecticut: Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield
..Significant severe weather event expected today...
A strong low pressure system to our north..and a very strong cold front..will serve as the focus for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Moderate instability along with a warm and humid airmass will set the stage for the thunderstorms this afternoon. Meanwhile, strong and supportive wind fields aloft, as well as strongly favorable low level shear..will support the development of supercell thunderstorms by afternoon.
These storms will progress eastward..likely eventually forming into a strong squall line. Storms will be capable of producing widespread damaging/destructive winds as well as some tornadoes. Please keep abreast of the situation. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a relatively rare "Moderate Risk" for severe thunderstorms. Keep alert for any other new watches or warnings for your local area. Keep an eye to the sky. Thunderstorms will move in fast and will, as mentioned above, likely be severe. The threat for severe weather should wane after 9pm.
