A significant system, with flooding rains as well as embedded thunderstorms, will impact the area overnight tonight. A large and expansive area of moderate to heavy rain is moving northeastward from the Delmarva and Central New Jersey in response to a strengthening low level jet. This low level jet will continue to push east/northeast as a low pressure system redevelops off the Mid Atlantic coast. Before it passes the area, significant support for moderate to heavy precipitation will continue for the next several hours. Unseasonably high precipitable water values (in excess of 1.2 this evening) will team up with strengthening forcing and the low level jet as well as some elevated instability to support embedded thunderstorms capable of producing very heavy rains. These rains could cause rapid flooding of urban areas, small creeks, and low lying areas. Please be cautious while driving or traveling. The heavier rains should end by the early morning hours of Tuesday. We will continue to update this post throughout the evening, so please check back for more information as the night goes on.
