Oppressive Heat Alert
2:09am June 7th, 2011
...This is not an official National Weather Service product and should not be confused for an official watch, warning or advisory...
*Hazards...Oppressive heat...with temperatures in the mid to upper 90's and dew points in the mid 60's...making for heat index values over 100 degrees and real-feel temperatures near or greater than 105 degrees at times.
*Impact...The most impacted will be the young, elderly, poorly hydrated, and those subject to prolonged exposure to the heat.
*Timing...The peak heating hours begin at 12:00pm and don't typically end until after 5:00pm each day. This Wednesday through Friday...take extra precautions to remain hydrated and keep an eye on others during these hours.
*Confidence... Confidence in the alert is high.
*Discussion...A ridge of high pressure building into the region will allow for temperatures to rise into the mid 90's for highs on Wednesday. Low temperatures Wednesday night will likely only be in the 70's. Thursday, the core of the heat ridge will likely be nearby, with temperatures in the upper 90's, potentially approaching 100 in some locales. Friday, although the ridge will be exiting, a cold front will be to our west..allowing for temperatures to rise towards the 90 degree mark for the third straight day before showers and thunderstorms approach by evening. The dew points will be rather high, in the 50's to 60's throughout the three days of heat--allowing for the heat to feel extremely oppressive..with heat index values over 100 degrees.
An Oppressive Heat Alert is issued when heat (either the raw temperature, or the temperature combined with the dew point) is expected to be oppressive enough to create hazardous conditions for the young, eldery, the poorly hydrated, or those subject to prolonged exposure. Typically, the heat index is forecast to reach or exceed 100 degrees for two or more days, or reach or exceed 105 degrees for one day. Stay tuned to updates on this Oppressive Heat Alert page, as well as updates from our blog and text forecasts.
