New York Metro Weather has issued a Winter Storm Advisory for Hunterdon, Hudson, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Ocean, Burlington, and Union counties in New Jersey...Southern Westchester, Manhattan, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties in New York...and Southern Farfield and Southern New Haven counties in Connecticut. This Winter Storm Advisory is valid from 12:00am Tuesday morning through 5:00pm Wednesday evening. A Winter Storm Advisory is issued when forecasters expect a moderate winter weather event to occur over a period of time, which may cause travel difficulties or delays. During periods of heavier snow, sleet, or freezing rain travel may become increasingly difficult, especially if snow accumulates rapidly. Currently, forecasters are expecting snow accumulations to range between 1 to 3 inches. The official text for the Winter Storm Advisory is below.

...Accumulations of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will cause travel difficulties Tuesday and Wednesday...

*Hazards...Moderate amounts of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will cause hazardous travel during the morning and evening commutes on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

*Accumulations...Total storm accumulations (snow and sleet) should range from 2 to 5 inches across most of the area..with an additional coating of freezing rain possible before a changeover to rain.

*Impact...Travel may be difficult and dangerous during the wintry precipitation. In addition, rainfall that occurs could compound problems with heavy snowpack...including roof collapses and flooding.

*Timing...The snow is expected to develop early Tuesday morning from southwest to northeast and change to sleet and snow by morning. There will be a break in precipitation before heavier precipitation begins again later Tuesday into Wednesday in the form of sleet and freezing rain, eventually changing to all rain. Precipitation should end by Wednesday evening.

*Confidence...Confidence in the advisory is moderate to high at this time.

*Information...
A Winter Storm Advisory means that a moderate winter weather event is expected across the area, specifically 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet as well as some freezing rain with this event. This wintry precipitation may cause some moderate travel difficulties or delays. Occasionally, heavier precipitation may cause very difficult travel especially if it accumulates rapidly. Please prepare for slippery and snowy roads and keep alert for updates on the situation.
