New York Metro Weather has issued a Snowstorm Warning for Sussex, Warren, Passaic, Morris, Essex, and Bergen counties in Northern New Jersey.. Orange, Putnam and Northern Westchester counties in Southeastern New York, and Inland Fairfield, Inland New Haven, and Litchfield County in Connecticut. This Snowstorm Warning is valid from 12:00am Tuesday morning through 5:00pm Wednesday evening. A Snowstorm Warning is issued when forecasters expect a high impact winter weather event to occur over the warning period, or in this specific case, are expecting 4 to 8 inches of snowfall to couple with accumulations of sleet or freezing rain to create extremely hazardous conditions. These conditions are forecast to occur over the next 24-36 hours or are currently occurring. The wintry precipitation accumulation may cause travel difficulties, delays, and stoppages...and may be hazardous to driving and traveling. The official text for the Snowstorm Warning is below.

*Counties Included: 
Connecticut:  Litchfield

*Hazards...Moderate to heavy snow, changing to a prolonged period of sleet and freezing rain, and eventually rain...which will cause travel difficulties and hazardous conditions Tuesday and Wednesday.

*Accumulations...Total snow and sleet accumulations should range from 4 to 8 inches...with an additional .10 to .25" of ice accretion..which will cause extremely hazardous conditions within the warning area.

*Impact...Travel will be heavily impacted by the snow, sleet, and freezing rain during the morning and evening commutes Tuesday and Wednesday.

*Timing...Light snow should begin early Tuesday morning and continue through Tuesday afternoon..possibly mixing with and changing to sleet. A break in the precipitation is forecast, but heavier precipitation should commence Tuesday evening into Wednesday with significant amounts of sleet and freezing rain before a transition to all rain. The precipitation should end by Wednesday evening.

*Confidence... Confidence in the higher amounts remains low, but confidence in the travel impacts and hazards is average.

A Snowstorm Warning means that forecasters expect the potential for 6 or more inches of snow to accumulate during the warning period, or expect near 6 inches of snow to couple with sleet or freezing rain to create very hazardous conditions. This wintry precipitation could cause severe travel difficulties, delays, or stoppages. It may be dangerous to travel during the warning time period.
