New York Metro Weather has issued a Winter Storm Advisory for Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Ocean, and Burlington counties in New Jersey...and Suffolk county in New York. This Winter Storm Advisory is valid from 10:00am Saturday morning through 10:00am Sunday Morning. A Winter Storm Advisory is issued when forecasters expect a moderate snowfall accumulation to occur over a period of time, which may cause travel difficulties or delays. During periods of heavier snow, travel may become increasingly difficult, especially if snow accumulates rapidly. Currently, forecasters are expecting snow accumulations to range between 3 and 6 inches, with higher amounts possible if any moderate bands develop. The official text for the Winter Storm Advisory is below.

New York Metro Weather
Winter Storm Advisory
2:20am January 8th, 2011

...This is not an official National Weather Service product and should not be confused for an official watch, warning or advisory...

*Counties incuded:
New Jersey: Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Ocean, Burlington
New York: Suffolk

...Moderate snow accumulations expected Saturday evening...

*Hazards...A period of moderate snowfall later Saturday with reduced visibility and poor road conditions

*Accumulations...Total storm accumulations should range from 3 to 6 inches within the advisory area. Higher amounts are expected across Ocean and Burlington counties in New Jersey, and Suffolk County on Long Island. Lower end amounts are expected elsewhere. Isolated amounts in excess of 6 inches are possible..specifically across portions of Burlington and Ocean counties.

*Impact...Travel may be difficult during the moderate to heavy snow with reduced visibilities and accumulation on roads.

*Timing...The snow is forecast to develop by late afternoon and continue through the early evening, especially across New Jersey. The snow will then pivot northeast towards Long Island and is expected to end by Sunday morning.

*Discussion...

A mid and upper level storm system will move near and over the region Saturday morning and afternoon. A strong piece of energy in the mid levels of the atmosphere will spawn a coastal low offshore of New Jersey. A band of moderate to heavy snow is forecast to develop over New Jersey, then shift northeast towards Long Island. Heavy snows are possible with reduced visibilities and poor travel conditions. Should be noted that uncertainty is pretty high here..as forecast guidance has been poor in handling this event. There is a small chance that Snowstorm Warnings will be needed for this area if models continue to trend snowier Saturday.

Stay tuned to updates on this Winter Storm Advisory page, as well as updates from our blog and text forecasts. As always, refer to your local National Weather Service for official forecasts and safety information.

*Information...

A Winter Storm Advisory means that a moderate snowfall is expected across the area, specifically 3-6 inches with this event. This snow may cause some moderate travel difficulties or delays. Occasionally, heavy snow may cause very difficult travel especially if it accumulates rapidly. Please prepare for slippery and snowy roads and keep alert for updates on the situation.
