New York Metro Weather has issued an Ice Storm Alert for Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Passaic, Morris, Essex, Bergen, Mercer, Middlesex, and Union counties in Northern New Jersey.. Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Northern Westchester counties in Southeastern New York, and Inland Fairfield, Inland New Haven, and Litchfield County in Connecticut. This Ice Storm Alert is valid from 3:00pm Tuesday afternoon through 5:00pm Wednesday evening. An Ice Storm Alert is issued when forecasters expect a high impact winter weather event to occur over the warning period, or in this specific case, are expecting light accumulations of snow and sleet to couple with ice accretion near or potentially greater than 1/2" to create extremely hazardous conditions. These conditions are forecast to occur over the next 24-36 hours or are currently occurring. The wintry precipitation accumulation may cause travel difficulties, delays, and stoppages...and may be extremely hazardous to driving and traveling. *Counties Included: 
New Jersey: Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Morris, Middlesex, Mercer, Somerset, Passaic, Bergen, Essex,  Union
New York: Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Northern Westchester
Connecticut: Inland Fairfield, Inland New Haven, Litchfield

*Hazards...Moderate to heavy sleet transitioning to freezing rain. Ice accretion of 0.35-0.50" is probable to occur within the area. Some greater amounts are possible. Hazardous travel is expected Tuesday through Wednesday.

*Accumulations...Total snow and sleet accumulations should range from 2 to 4 inches...with an additional .20 to .50" of ice accretion..which will cause extremely hazardous conditions within the warning area.

*Impact...Travel will be heavily impacted by the snow, sleet, and freezing rain during the morning and evening commutes Tuesday and Wednesday.

*Timing...Light snow, sleet, and freezing rain has already fallen across the area Tuesday. Precipitation should remain light and spotty the next few hours with freezing drizzle. Heavier precipitation should commence Tuesday evening into Wednesday with significant amounts of sleet and freezing rain before a transition to all rain. The precipitation should end by Wednesday evening.

*Confidence... Confidence in the higher amounts remains low, but confidence in the travel impacts and hazards is average.

An Ice Storm Alert means that forecasters expect the potential for icing to significantly impact travel and safety, with generally upwards of 0.25" of ice accretion forecast.  This wintry precipitation could cause severe travel difficulties, delays, or stoppages. It may be dangerous to travel during the warning time period. Please prepare for slippery and snowy roads and keep alert for updates on the situation.
