Despite it's minimal impact on the local area, New York Metro Weather Blog will focus some attention on Hurricane Igor and Hurricane Karl which continues to churn in the Atlantic and Gulf respectively this morning. Over the next several hours into days, pay attention to New York Metro Weather Blog as we continue to post updates, hi resolution images, detail text and forecasts. By clicking "read more", you will open a timeline of events and images with constant updates as Hurricane Igor makes it's approach towards Bermuda, and Hurricane Karl as it moves inland along the Mexican coast.

2:12pm 9/17: Hurricane Karl made landfall earlier this afternoon as a major hurricane along the Mexican coast. Meanwhile,  Hurricane Igor continues to move northwest and weaken slightly, with maximum sustained winds at 115 miles per hour. These are down significant since this time yesterday. That being said, the hurricane continues to make it's approach towards Bermuda. A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the island.

7:26am 9/17: Hurricane Karl is nearing landfall in  Mexico with 120mph winds as it strengthened dramatically over the last 12 hours. Hurricane Igor continues it's northwest push..with maximum sustained winds now at 125 mph. Meanwhile, Hurricane Julia has sped up considerably in it's northwest turn, and subsequently weakened with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph this morning. We will continue to update throughout the day...and we are also working on sifting through storm reports from yesterday's events, so bear with us at the moment.

2:00pm 9/17: Hurricane Karl formed in the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico earlier this afternoon...officially categorized as a Category 1 Hurricane by the National Hurricane Center with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Elsewhere, Hurricane Igor remains strong with maximum sustained winds of 140mph. Hurricane Julia is weakening slightly with winds down to 100mph sustained as of early this afternoon. The satellite image to the right is zoomed in on the developing and strengthening Hurricane Karl..which is forecast to make landfall on the Mexican coast Friday morning or afternoon. Karl continues to undergo intensification which began this morning. Hurricane Igor is forecast to continue northwest---and weaken over the next few days...as it approaches the island of Bermuda. Hurricane Julia is forecast to weaken as well, and recurve north and eventually northeast. (click read more for older updates)

9:38am 9/16: Igor continues it's shift northwestward---and it strengthened overnight. The morning advisory from NHC put the maximum sustained winds at 145mph--continuing to make Igor a strong, dangerous major hurricane. The official forecast track still takes Igor near Bermuda as it recurves north and eventually northeast. In the impressive image to the right, you can see Igor (the largest system) churning northwest, Julia (with 105mph sustained winds) on the east side of the image with a still impressive structure, and Karl (in the far southwest Gulf of Mexico). Karl is currently undergoing rapid intensification as it moves northwest through very warm waters and favorable shear. As of this morning, the NHC placed it's winds at 65 mph, just short of Hurricane status, but it's strengthening since then suggests we have a hurricane in the southwest gulf this afternoon.

11:31pm 9/15: Hurricane Igor continues churning at a west-northwest clip as the ERC is nearly complete at 11pm this evening. The IR image to the left shows this rather well.  The latest 11pm NHC advisory puts the maximum sustained winds at 135 miles per hour. The storm continues it's slow trek northwest...moving a slow 9 miles per hour at the moment. Hurricane Julia, seen in the far eastern extent of the image, remains strong this evening, with winds of 115 miles per hour. The official forecast track for Igor takes the hurricane over or just east of the island of Bermuda---as a hurricane below "major" status. That being said, it remains a significantly hazardous situation for all interests on the island. It remains to be seen how much Igor will strengthen overnight tonight into Thursday morning--it's last real potential for strengthening before the recurve is forecast to begin.

8:20pm 9/15: Hurricane Igor continues to undergo an ERC (eyewall replacement cycle) early this afternoon, but is showing some signs of strengthening. The official forecast from the National Hurricane Center does call for some strengthening over the next several hours into tomorrow afternoon.  You can also see the western edges of the outflow from Hurricane Julia this afternoon, as well as Tropical Storm Karl which is inland in Mexico at this hour. The tropics are expected to remain active over the next week or so at least, although there are no immediate significant threats to the United States mainland. Igor continues to pose a significant threat to the island of Bermuda. All interests on the island should monitor for the progression of Igor. Begin planning now for potential evacuations or home preparations for the hurricane.
