...Summer-like heat likely this afternoon...

A large ridge has built into the area and will continue to do so today. With a back-door type cold front to the northeast of the region, a warm flow will establish itself across the area Wednesday. The temperatures aloft and at the surface will be nearly the warmest of the year. By afternoon, temperatures across Northeast New Jersey, New York City, and Southwest Connecticut are likely to exceed 90 degrees and may reach into the mid 90's. New York MetroWeather has issued an enhanced and severe "High Risk" for excessive heat, with probabilities of 60 percent that the heat index will exceed 90 degrees F. This, coupled with rising dew points ahead of the front, will create a very warm and muggy environment. With the weak northwest flow, sea-breeze development will be slow to occur..allowing warmer temperatures to penetrate even to the area shores. As is always the case during hot days, keep an eye on small children and the elderly. Keep hydrated and do not participate in excessive outdoor activity or exercise without proper hydration.

In addition to the heat, the frontal boundary pushing westward may serve as the focus for showers and thunderstorms (some possibly strong and severe) Wednesday afternoon, and again on Thursday. The greatest threats with these storms would be heavy rain, some hail, and damaging winds as well as frequent lightning. There is a Slight Risk for severe weather this afternoon and evening. Please keep abreast of the situation, especially for severe weather watches and warnings.
