New Years Becomes a Hassle North and West

Well, another storm affects us on another Holiday. Yes, its true. Every major Holiday has featured a storm system. Thanksgiving, Christmas (and Hannukah) and now New Years. This time the systems track is easier to forecast, but the problem will be where it will snow and where it will Rain. Low pressure will move from the Northern Plains into the Ohio Valley, and then transfer its energy to a secondary coastal low off the Mid Atlantic Coast. The bulk of the precipitation will likely affect the area on Saturday into Sunday.

The forecast is certainly a tricky one as far as the Rain/Snow Line goes. Though on models, Its
simple to see that the 0c line is well south of the area into Southern NJ, it does get more complicated than that. In order to get snow, we need the Boundary Layer to cool. In order for this too happen, enough Forcing must take place. It appears that this will take place in the strongest fashion over Northwest New Jersey and into Interior New England. The forcing will be marginable over New York City, Central New Jersey and Philadelphia, and very weak near the Coastal Areas.

Also, this is an extremely fast moving storm. Though it will snow fairly hard, this will be an extremely fast moving system. With that in mind, and the fact that most of the area just wont have conditions favorable for snow, we will hold back on the map for this system. The system will really be just a nuisance, and any snow that falls will be minor at that.

S+E of the City- Scattered Flakes on the back end
Phl through Central NJ to the City- Rain to Snow, Slushy Inch
N+W- Quick Rain to Snow, an inch or two.

Enjoy your New Years
